The Heritage Steward Buddy Scheme

BuddyThe Heritage Steward Buddy Scheme is designed to build confidence and provide reassurance for new volunteers.

A Buddy is an experienced Heritage Steward who is trained to offer survey help and advice to new volunteers on a one-to-one basis. We have five fully trained Buddies who are ready to assist new volunteers with their surveys. Contact us for details.

“I contacted a local volunteer centre as I had some spare time on my hands but also because volunteering is viewed beneficially on your CV when seeking employment. The project looked interesting so I attended an induction day but due to illness was unable to begin carrying out surveys straight away. Concerned that I had forgotten much of what I had previously learned, I contacted H@R who organised for me to carry out some surveys with another steward through their 'buddy' scheme. I found the experience very informative and useful in that I learned how to follow the building descriptions and how to approach occupants. I would highly recommend the scheme for anyone lacking the confidence to get started, I now undertake surveys on a weekly basis!”

“I felt very honoured when Natalie asked me to be a ‘Buddy’ to a newly trained Heritage Steward and although a little apprehensive I eagerly accepted the request. Although the knowledge I have gained as a mentor judge under the Green Flag scheme has been very useful as a ‘Buddy’, this was a new experience. Passing on the knowledge you have gained through the excellent training sessions put on by the H@R team together with your surveying experiences can be very rewarding. There is an added bonus of working with a fresh pair of eyes that may interpret what you are surveying from a completely different angle to yours. So all in all I am very pleased to have accepted the request to be a ‘Buddy’.”
