Louth

The Louth conservation area covers a total area of 106.20 hectares and is divided into 12 distinct character areas: Town Centre, Queen Street, St Michael’s, Cemetery, James Street, Lower Eastgate, Riverhead, George Street, Westgate, High Holme, St Mary’s Lane and Westgate Fields.

The conservation area is predominantly residential but also contains a high number of commercial properties as well as some large open green spaces to the west end.

The conservation area contains a total of 193 listed buildings and 41 unlisted buildings of local importance. Out of this number 9 are Grade II* listed (Westgate House, The Reading Room, 19 Market Place, Thornton House, The Sycamores, Cromwell's House, The Mansion, a Nineteenth century terrace on Bridge Street and 72-76 Westgate Place.) There is also a single Grade I listed building within the conservation area – St James’ Church (rebuilt mainly in the early C15 and substantially unaltered, except for the tower of about 60 years later and the 2 porches, which date from the 1861-1869 restoration by James Fowler.)
