The conservation area is located immediately west of the historic core of the city and occupies an area of 6.95 hectares. It comprises land and properties on and to the north of Carline Road (including The Lawn on Union Road, cottages on Castle Lane, and houses at the end of Burton Road), and a few large houses and villas on the east side of Yarborough Road either side of the junction with Carline Road.
There is one listed building within the conservation area: The Lawn (II*).
