The conservation area comprises most of the older part of the village which includes Victoria Street extending north to Victoria Bridge, and the High Street extending south to Brewery Lane. The boundary of the conservation area also follows the line of a number of properties on Chapel Street, Low Street and Vine Street. The conservation area covers a total of 11.21 hectares.

The conservation area is predominantly residential but is interspersed with commercial properties.

There are 16 listed buildings in the conservation area including The Old Hall (Grade II*) a small country house dating back to the late 16th century and St Andrew’s church (Grade I) a spired limestone and ironstone parish church dating back to the 14th century.
