About the Project

Lincolnshire is a county of diverse landscapes and regional variations which have resulted in a historic environment with a rich and unique character. Many aspects of this heritage has been recognised as being nationally important; including our market towns, historic churches, landscapes and ancient monuments. These all add to the county's distinctive character and are of significant value for leisure, tourism and the local economy.

St Michael's Burwell

The principal risk to this unique historic environment is one of gradual decay and erosion. In time this could lead to a loss of features which would have an increasing impact on the character of the county.

Current Information on Heritage at Risk has been collected by Heritage Lincolnshire and this suggests that  at least 4.8% of the county's Grade I and II* listed buildings are at risk. The national average is 3.2%. Provisional data collected so far also indicates that the percentage is even higher for Lincolnshire's Grade II listed buildings.

Market RasenThere are still significant gaps within the information, but evidence we have and our experience within the sector illustrates that there is a need to address the issue of Heritage at Risk within Lincolnshire. The first steps towards this are to establish baseline data upon which to build a county-wide strategy to halt the deterioration of Lincolnshire's historic environment and to engage local communities in the process.

The future of Lincolnshire’s Heritage will ultimately be determined by building successful partnerships so that we can work together to ensure that our inheritance is passed on to future generations.

The work of volunteer Heritage Stewards is key to the success of the project and Heritage Lincolnshire is also working with the following organisations in developing the project and the strategy for heritage at risk in the county.
