The conservation area is essentially linear in form as it encompasses High Street, Salem Street and sections of Mill Road and Westhorpe Road. It extends from the eastern boundary of the playing fields to the east to the western boundary of 96 High Street in the west (but excluding the Poachers Hide and Welby Drive developments to the north). It covers a total area of 16.29 hectares.
The conservation area is predominantly residential with some commercial and minor industrial properties.
There are 10 Grade II and 1 Grade I listed buildings in the conservation area (the Church of St Peter and St Paul- C12, C14, C15, restored 1896).
