Castle Bytham

The Conservation Area encompasses the historic core of the village and modern peripheral housing developments. The buildings along Station Road situated to the south of The Priory are excluded from the boundary. The conservation area covers a total of 47.67 hectares.

The conservation area features a number of distinct character areas. Most notably from the Water Lane/Glen Road junction where the enclosed nature of Glen Road opens up offering views of the castle and the surrounding countryside. The remainder of the village features a variety of buildings and building plots that add to the diverse nature of the conservation area.

There are 19 listed buildings within the Conservation Area, which include the 12th century St James Church (Grade I) and The Priory (Grade II*) which dates from the 15th century with later additions and alterations. There are also a number of important unlisted buildings especially on High Street, Pinfold Road and Heathcote Road (mainly limestone buildings with clay pantile or Collyweston slate roofs). The Norman castle, associated town defences and fish ponds form a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
